Prayer of Thanks to Mother Earth
Sunset - Lake Tahoe
Gaia. Terra. Mother Earth. My home, a beautiful blue planet spinning in the infinity of space. I thank you, Mother Earth, for the gifts you have given me.
For bravery. As a child I would plunge into the ocean, embracing and excited by the unknown. In my imagination great creatures lived just beyond my sight, hidden by the next wave. With courage I would give myself up to the waves, trusting I would always find my way to shore, buoyed by the salty water.
For teaching me about community. From the ants and bees I came to understand and value collaboration. I discovered the importance of every individual participating in society in the way that best suits their talents. Your small insects have taught me to believe that anything can be accomplished if everyone contributes, and all will benefit together.
For calm, reflected in the peaceful, deep blue of the sky as the clouds pass overhead. I love to watch the clouds transform, sometimes soft and wispy, sometimes threatening and black, knowing that above them the quiet sky waits patiently, calmly, for their moods to fade.
For showing me what real freedom looks like. I see the gliding hawk far above me, and I picture myself transcending care and drifting lightly on the winds. And early every morning I listen to the birds singing to the dawn, and I join them in welcoming the day. The birds remind me of the true meaning of carefree.
For wisdom as taught by the trees. Steadfast, protective and sheltering, supporting vast forest communities we are only just beginning to understand and appreciate. From them I learn humility and balance.
For demonstrating trust. My whole foundation is grounded in the knowledge that your mountains will not shift with the wind. From them I learn to be unshaken by changes around me.
For offering hope. Each year when the seeds in my garden sprout into plants and flowers the myriad colors of jewels I am able to start again. Spring — your season of possibilities and looking forward.
I thank you Mother Earth, for nurturing my body, my mind, and my soul.
